HIE TAKES THE LEAD WITH A 4-UNDER-PAR 68 IN THE SECOND ROUND

Osborn and Choe are neck-and-neck in Girls Division at the Lennar Junior at Mission Hills

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. Fifteen-year-old Rory Hie, who shot a 4-under-par 68, emerged from the heat of the competition as the new leader after the second round of the Lennar Junior at Mission Hills. In the Girls Division, Jennifer Osborn and Esther Choe are tied for the lead with two-day tournament totals of 3-under-par 141.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Lennar Junior at Mission Hills features 84 players from seven states and Canada, including 70 California natives. The 23rd annual Lennar Junior at Mission Hills is a 54-hole, stroke play tournament that is being held at Mission Hills Country Club — Arnold Palmer Course and began on Tuesday.

Hie of Lakewood, Calif., admitted that he began playing badly but eventually made a 50-footer for birdie on No. 7 that turned his luck around.

“My goal today was to just keep up with the leader,” he said.

Not only was he able to keep up with the first round’s leader, Tim Cha of Chino Hills, Calif., but he was able to surge ahead, making birdie on Nos. 3,4,7,8 and 10, putting his two-day total at 7-under-par 137.

“On this course, your second shots are key,” he said. “I’m definitely working on my putting and fairway wood shots for tomorrow.”

Trailing Hie with a two-day tournament total of 6-under-par 138, is Jeff Koprivetz of Yorba Linda, Calif.  In third with a 5-under-par 139, is Garrett Sapp of Cerritos, Calif., who made an impressive hole-in-one on No. 7.  Tied for fourth with two-day tournament totals of 4-under-par 140, is Lucas Lee of Torrance, Calif., and Jamie Lovemark of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
